Using Our Maths B

Following Units 6-12

These activities bring together the different mathematical skills that your child should now know. By combining these skills in puzzles and activities your child will need to reason and think of solutions, as well as complete calculations. This will help your child to really understand the skills they are learning.

Talk through each group of questions and ask your child how they are going to solve the challenges.

It’s good to get stuck sometimes! When this happens discuss the challenge in the following order:

  • What do we need to find out to solve the challenge?
  • What do we know by looking at the question?
  • Want could we do first?
  • How would that help us?

Is there anything else we could do?

Activity: Play ‘Simon says’

This is an adaptation of the ‘Simon says’ game that we can use to practise our mental maths.

You say ’Simon says 2+5=7’ or ‘3+4=8’ your child has to say ‘right’ or ‘wrong’

Make sure you choose both correct and incorrect examples so that your child has to think about the answer. Choose addition and subtraction sums that will challenge your child, but that they can do in their head.

Then try the same with multiplication and division sums from the 2,5 and 10 times tables. ’Simon says 3×2=6’ Once again choose both correct and incorrect examples so that your child has to think about the answer.

Activity: Play ‘find the missing number’

We have been learning that addition undoes subtraction and division undoes multiplication. Remind your child to use that knowledge to complete the following:

12 + 5 = 17 so 17 – 5 = ?
31 + 8 = 39 so 39 – 31 = ?
46 – 2 = 44 so 44 + 2 = ?
29 – 5 = 24 so 24 + 5 = ?
2 x 4 = 8 so 8 ÷ 4 = ?
5 x 3 = 15 so 15 ÷ 3 = ?
10 x 4 = 40 so 40 ÷ 10 =?
30 ÷ 5 = 6 so 5 x 6 = ?
