We can recall and use numbers bonds to 20

Year 1 Unit 6b

What we are learning:

  • We are learning to recall the number bonds to 20
  • Being able to memorise and recall our number bonds to 10 i.e. that 3+7=10, 7 + 3 = 10, 10-7=3, 10-3=7 etc will help with harder calculations in the future.
  • Once children are confident with number bonds to 10 we want to extend our understanding of the pattern to know that we can apply this knowledge to 20 and beyond in the future e.g.13+7+20, 20-7=3, 20-3=7 etc.
  • We are focusing on reading and saying the numbers rather than writing them.
ACTIVITY 1: NUMBER PAIRS ADDITION GAME
ACTIVITY 2: NUMBER SUBTRACTION GAME
ACTIVITY 3: FIND THE MISSING NUMBER GAME

Activities you can do at home:

Number Bond Pairs Addition Game to 10
Write numbers 0 – 10, an addition sign, and an equals sign on paper …
shuffle and turn upside down.
Take it in turns to add with practical objects.

Number Bond Pairs Subtraction Game to 10
Write numbers 0 – 10, a subtraction sign, and an equals sign on paper
Then always starting with 10… build the subtraction number bonds to 10
Take it in turns to subtract with practical objects.

Fill in the Missing Number Activity Sheet Pairs to 20.

Good questions to ask:

Vary the language you use.
If I have 5 and 5 how many do I have altogether?
If I have 5 how many more do I need to have 10?
5 and ‘something’ make 10, what is the ‘something’?
If I start with 10 and take away 5 how many are left?
5 + 5 = ?

If your child:

Is having difficulty with number bonds to 10.
Start with a lower number that they are confident with e.g. 6 until they can see the pattern.
